Welcome!

Mach-5 (Molecular Machinery: Modelling, Making, Measuring) 2022 in Plön/Germany was the first event of a biannual conference series.

Topics: The events target scientists who are active in the field of molecular machines and their components (motors, switches, rotors, actuators …). As in the macroscopic world, specific functions (directed motion, pumping, sensing, assembly, information storage, processing…) arise from coupling to an energy source or trigger (light, redox, concentration gradient, electric, magnetic fields …) and their interaction with the environment (solution, surface, polymers, biological systems …).

Contributions within the 3M (modelling, making and measuring) of these systems are welcome.

Who: The event is devoted to the promotion of young scientists, who define as being early in their career after the PhD, but before a tenured position. 80-120 participants are considered an appropriate size of the event.

Format: Only young scientists present their results in oral contributions with ample room for discussion. Senior scientists are welcome as chairs, tutorial presentations and in panel discussions. Several new formats should become the distinguishing feature of the event: 1. Intro talks (presentations of the research program by young starting group leaders), 2. Idea pitches (short advertisements of a project idea by postdocs or group leaders), 3. Vision statements (reflection on general problems, prospects and emerging areas by established senior scientists), 4. Beyond science (few selected contributions on cultural aspects, i.e. arts & sciences, possibly science politics etc.). Ideally, “ordinary” talks should be avoided. All of these presentations should be kept brief, max. 20 min including discussion. Every participant should present!

We are looking forward to seeing you at Mach-5

Warm regards and best wishes
